How can I make a door bigger?

Not the doorway, but the actual door.

I want to convert my swinging door for the master bath to a sliding "barn" door. My house has all of the doors in the same style and I want to use the existing door but need to make it bigger to cover the entire opening. I need to add 6"-8" to the width and 3"-4" to the height.

Door is 32" wide and 1 3/4 thick and is solid core.

I was thinking of adding a 3" board to each side and one on the top by glue and by drilling pilot holes with a counter sink and screwing them to the door and each other. I was also thinking of maybe using biscuits as well. Then wood filler for the joint and the screw holes to make everything flush.

Will this work or is the "core" insufficient to hold the added wood? Is there a better way to go?

Also, what would be the best way to get 1 3/4 think wood to add to the door? Would I just get 2x4 lumber and plane it down?

Thanks.
