This week I finally wore out my Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires and wanted to offer some observations on how they wore. Looking at my log I put 30 sessions on the tires totally just about 12 hours of track time which in my book is pretty good, although the last 3 or 4 sessions they were totally shot.
I had been looking for the tell tale cording of the outside LF shoulder but never saw it. In fact, at the time I took them off the car you could still see the center grooves in the tire and there was no cord showing.
What I did notice was that starting around the 25th session or so the car started to understeer and it got worse with each progressive session. The good news is that the Michelin's gave great feel and you could safely push the car to and past the limits of adhesion but the front tires were clearly shot as the balance went to severe understeer.
It's interesting that the rears didn't seem to fall off as bad so I don't know if it was heat cycles or if Michelin used some ultra-hard rubber on the tires once you wore through the super sticky stuff.
For day 2 at NCM I went to my Super Sports and they were much better than the worn Cup 2's.
